The Digitally Empowered!® Course helps you become more tech-savvy so you can find the best information and support to empower you and your loved one at every step of your cancer journey.
At the Patient Empowerment Network, we believe that an informed patient is an empowered patient. Patients make the best decisions about their care when they are armed with credible information.
You need to be able to access reliable information about the latest cancer treatments so you can receive the best, most personalized care available – and the best possible outcome for you.
Our goal is to help you find your way to the information you need because we know that where there is knowledge there are choices – and where there are choices there is hope.
Why We Created The Digitally Empowered!® Course
While cancer is a disease that affects all age groups, the majority of the 14 million Americans diagnosed with cancer are aged 65 and older. Depending on the type of cancer, the disease can progress quickly, which is why access to timely and up to date information is of the essence.
In today’s digital age, we have access to a wealth of health resources on the Internet. With the click of a mouse we can find information on the latest research studies, clinical trials and new drug treatments. For an older generation not brought up with the Internet, the online space can be a confusing and overwhelming place to navigate. The opportunity to acquire online health information is out of reach for those unfamiliar with the digital terrain of the Internet, mobile apps and social media.
We want to change that.
We believe all patients, regardless of age and technical ability should have equal access to health information to make the best decisions about their care.
So, we created The Digitally Empowered™ Course with the aim of improving the digital health literacy of older cancer patients and their families.
How The Digitally Empowered® Course Can Empower You
The Digitally Empowered® Course opens the door to a whole new world of knowledge and tools to help you research your condition, ask informed questions and take an active role in shared decision making with your care team.
You will learn the basic skills you need to use the Internet, social media, and mobile applications with confidence to search for health information and connect with other patients and care partners along the way.
The development of this program would not have been possible without the support and guidance of the Digitally Empowered Focus Group. Throughout the development of the program, focus group members provided their input and direction, their support and encouragement, and their time and experience.
